Purple Heron, 3/28/2012

Heard that a Chinese Pond Heron has arrived again in the farm field, I rushed to the farm field to take a picture of it, only to find that it's Purple Heron, not Chinese Pond Heron. Ouch! I've taken many pictures of Purple Heron already in this January. It's quite a disappointment! But it's alright, the nature made up for what I lost by giving me another surprise, the Tufted Duck! It's the first time I had ever photographed a Tufted Duck.

Purple Heron is big and tall, only slightly smaller than Gray Heron and Great White Egret. In Taiwan, Purple Heron is rare Winter migratory bird. As its name shows, adult Purple Heron's body is mainly purple, but subadult Purple Heron has a browny tone. In Ilan County, Taiwan, there have been several records of Purple Herons breeding in the wild.
